Spirituality
Our Founder, Revd Andrew Reed’s entrepreneurial charity work was driven by his Christian faith. In establishing education and care for children of any faith, he was living out the love of God that he himself knew and spoke about in his church.
This has held true for over two-hundred years, so that even today the spiritual life of Reed’s School is a very important part of its identity as a Christian foundation, caring for and educating boys and girls.
Although distinctively Christian with a Church of England Chaplain, the Chapel at Reed’s is accessible to pupils of all or no faith. Thoughtful exploration of spiritual and life issues is encouraged, so that pupils don’t settle for either an immature faith or a facile atheism.
The Christian ethos is expressed in the School’s values and lived out by pupils and teachers in an accepting and open community. Pastoral and spiritual support is given to pupils of any or no religion throughout the school, as well as being available to members of staff and the wider school community.
The Chaplain, Revd Andrew Winter delivers short weekly Chapel services where pupils hear from a variety of people, including visiting speakers. Tutor groups are also given the opportunity to express themselves on an issue of spiritual, moral and social importance. This is a thought-provoking challenge, as well as an opportunity for pupils to gain confidence in public speaking.
There are also more formal, occasional Sunday Services such as Remembrance and Advent in which the excellent Chapel Choir lifts the level of sung worship. For pupils in First to Fourth Forms there is a Christian group which meets weekly, whilst senior pupils also meet regularly to talk and pray.
