The Boarding Houses

The Boarding Houses

There are three boarding houses at Reed’s divided by age. This means that there is separation from pupils’ allocated main Houses, which are very much at the heart of the school, so they can easily move from day to boarding without having to change their House affiliation. The Close (Years 7 and 8) places an emphasis on a small, homely, and nurturing environment with its mantra of ‘Ubuntu’ (I am because we are) and its friendly house dog, Honey. School House (Years 9 to 11) sees pupils undertake a programme of domestic, practical, and social life skills aimed at increasing their independence whilst the co-educational Sixth Form House prepares pupils to thrive in the wider world; many pupils start boarding at this point to experience communal living prior to going to university. .

It is a real feature of our boarding that older boarders enjoy socialising with and looking out for those younger than them. Indeed, there are many wonderful boarding moments that such a philosophy brings, ranging from large games of mixed touch rugby after a summer barbecue, getting together to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival to Guy Fawkes Night to the games of football played on the astroturfs in the evenings…where it is rumoured that the Headmaster has joined in and scored some wonder goals!

The Close (Years 7 - 8)

The Junior Boarding House, The Close, is where our youngest boarders begin their boarding life at Reed's School.  It is situated in a detached, self-contained building with wonderful facilities where the boys can experience a quality of care second to none within a warm and nurturing home from home atmosphere.

The boys' needs are looked after by the resident Head of The Close and his wife, supported by two resident tutors, duty tutors and a matron. There are comfy dormitories, a games room, prep room, kitchen and spacious new entrance foyer.

The School’s playing fields and astroturf pitches are also just outside, allowing opportunities for boarders to relax in the evenings and at weekends.

School House (Years 9 - 11)

The Middle School Boarding House, School House, is where boarders from the age of 13 to 16 are accommodated. It is situated on the first and second floors of the main school building.

The resident Housemaster and his wife, along with four resident tutors and a matron, focus on creating a nuturing, structured and enjoyable environment where supervised prep and a wide range of after-school activities can be effectively combined.

In School House, the boarders transition through the Middle School and develop on their journey towards completing their GCSEs and preparing for Sixth Form life.

The Sixth Form House (Years 12 - 13)

The Sixth Form House has recently undergone a full refurbishment and is a spacious, well-equipped building incorporating dedicated facilities for boarding, work and recreation for our most senior pupils. Life in the Sixth Form prepares students for moving on to university and, whilst staff provide close supervision and guidance, this is balanced by encouraging self confidence, independence and resilience.

Girls who board are accommodated in a separate wing. The Sixth Form House has a resident Head of Sixth Form Boarding and his wife, responsible for the boarders supported by the Head of Sixth Form and a matron.
