International Women's Day
We mark International Women’s Day by celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the globe, and also marking a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Some of the initiatives have included:
~ A group of School Prefects delivered a thought-provoking talk in Assembly asking students to reflect on the importance of International Women’s Day; their own experiences in challenging gender stereotypes and the need for us to challenge bias and inequality in all forms.
~ A wider team of Upper Sixth Prefects devised activities for tutors of all year groups to use throughout the week – activities ranged from drawing a woman who has inspired you, to exploring language associated with gender, to reflecting on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk: ‘We should all be feminists’.
~ Pupils and Staff engaging in the annual campaigns that have included #ChooseToChallenge #BreakTheBias #Embrace Equity #Inspire Inclusion and this year’s #AccelerateAction with lesson discussions, posters and videos.
~ The championing unsung heroes of women’s history in Assembly with presentations from members of staff.
~ Hosting an Upper Sixth and Lower Sixth Girls’ Dinner led by the House Captains with a variety of team building tasks and games.
A Girls’ Breakfast, where the girls attended a series of talks given by Old Reedonians. The girls listened to real life reflections on working in male dominated environments, being an entrepreneur, how behaviours have changed since the #metoo movement, accountability and sharing their real-life experiences of being a woman in the modern working world.
