Biology

Biology stimulates pupils' curiosity and brings the vivid reality of the living world to their understanding, both in and out of the classroom, so that they are thoroughly prepared and encouraged to embark on further studies in the subject through well-designed experimental and investigative studies, interesting literature and enthusiastic teaching.

The modern laboratories have the latest technology and teaching resources, giving pupils the opportunity to experience for themselves the practical side of Biology. A new digital microscope enhances pupils in their work on microscopy and pupil also venture further into the field of biotechnology. Field-trips add to the learning experience, allowing pupils to develop their sampling techniques, learning from experts in the field. The VetMed Society is aimed at pupils who are aspiring to university applications and careers as doctors, dentists, veterinarians and biomedical scientists. During the sessions pupils are given the opportunity to justify the importance of their experiences to peers amidst scrutinising questioning, as well as articulate their ideas in an academic environment.

All pupils study Biology up to Year 9 (Third Form) and develop the full range of skills needed, driven through practical work, to provide a broad foundation in the subject. The concepts covered in the Third Form provide a general introduction to the IGCSE course.

The optional IGCSE course allows pupils to acquire knowledge and understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles, together with the skills needed for their use in new and changing situations. The stimulating and interesting nature of IGCSE produces confident and able biologists.

A Level biologists follow a course designed to inspire, nurture a passion for Biology and develop practical skills alongside understanding concepts and principles. The subject content is relevant in the classroom and to real world experiences and is a stepping stone to further study in courses such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, zoology, marine biology or forensic science. Whatever field a pupil eventually works in, they will find Biology a very rewarding and challenging course which develops many of the skills essential for a successful career.
