Additional Sport - Athletics
Athletics is a popular sport open to all pupils in the Summer Term at Reed’s, allowing extension of the work covered in Physical Education lessons or the opportunity to try out a range of different disciplines, from hurdles to the shot put.
Coaching is provided by fully-trained teaching staff, complemented by professional athletics coaches. Our excellent facilities (including a 400m running track and long jump pit) allow us to hold an annual Sports Day, enabling the majority of pupils to exhibit their skills whilst representing their Houses. The day is usually blessed with good weather, allowing parents to watch the excitement on the track as pupils compete to break school records, improve their personal bests and gain victory for their House.
Reed's has gained national recognition in athletics in recent years. Several athletes have competed at the English Schools' Athletic Association (ESAA) Championships and we have also experienced considerable success in the ESAA Track & Field Cup. Athletes have also represented North East Surrey at Cross Country and qualified for the National School’s Biathlon Championships.
Each year, teams compete in the Achilles Schools' Relays, held at Iffley Road, Oxford (the venue of Roger Bannister's 4- minute mile) where they usually perform very well against some of the best sports schools in the country.
Reed’s is able to support specialist athletes through our High Performance Programme.
