Autumn Concert triumph with an array of different ensembles
BackThe Autumn Concert began with a rousing rendition of Weill’s ‘Threepenny Opera Overture’ and Strauss’s ‘Radetzky March’ by the Reed’s Orchestra, followed by the Guitar Ensemble performing ‘Andante’ by Sor and ‘Blue Boogie’ by Cracknell. The Saxophone Ensemble’s arrangement of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ for soprano alto tenor and baritone sax was followed by the Senior String Ensemble’s tranquil first movement of Mozart’s string quartet No.1.
The Brass Ensemble was next with ‘Soul Bossa Nova’, by Quincy Jones. Energico followed with an exciting arrangement of ‘Csardas’, then the Clarinet Ensemble with Piazzolla’s ‘Libertango’, which was given a suitably Argentinian flavour by Simeon Smith and his accordion playing. A small chamber group comprising Megan Davies on flute, Amber Emson on violin, Trevor Lui on piano and Chris Hedges on cello took the audience back to the Baroque period with Bach’s Sinfonia from ‘Himmelskönig, sei willkommen’, played with elegance and grace.
The Brass Choir gave an energetic performance of ‘I Got Rhythm’ by Gershwin and the Wind Band followed with ‘The Final Countdown’. The Jazz Orchestra finale with ‘Boogie Down’ and ‘They Call Me Mr Tibbs’, featured solos by Will Everitt, Ruben Emson, Barney Goodwin, Aron Davies and Cole Huntley.
The concert was greatly enjoyed by all who attended and the vast array of different ensembles and styles of music performed was a testament to the hard work of the pupils.
