LGBT+
At Reed's, we provide a supportive environment for all pupils regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. Both through our pastoral and academic programmes, pupils are actively encouraged to discuss their understanding of equality and the various issues facing LGBT+ people today. This work is supported by an Equality noticeboard which has a prominent location inside the main school corridor and an array of both fiction and non-fiction books available in the school library.
In particular, during LGBT History Month, pupils are encouraged to consider the role the gay rights movement has had in promoting equality and to learn about significant LGBT+ figures from history. We have guest speakers from Stonewall and members of staff run well-received, whole school assemblies around these themes.
In addition, pupils have worn Rainbow Laces on Sports Days as well as inter-school Rugby and Netball matches. Following sport and taking part can give individuals a sense of community, energy and a feeling of belonging. Too often members of the LGBT+ community feel excluded from pursing these interests, so the Rainbow Laces, are an excellent way to promote an inclusive atmosphere, to ensure that sport is everyone's game.
