More Able, Gifted and Talented (MAGT)

At Reed's School, we believe that every pupil should be challenged, inspired and supported to realise their full potential. Our More Able, Gifted and Talented (MAGT) programme forms an important part of this commitment.

We recognise exceptional ability and potential across a wide range of domains, including academic subjects, the creative arts, sport and leadership. Our aim is not simply to celebrate high attainment, but to identify and develop the talents, interests and aspirations of individual pupils and to support their progress in this context.

Identifying Potential

More able learners may demonstrate exceptional performance, significant potential, or particular aptitude within a specific area. Identification is therefore based on a range of evidence, including:

• Academic attainment and progress

• Teacher observation and professional judgement

• Engagement with stretch and challenge opportunities

• Subject-specific characteristics of high ability

• Previous school information and admissions data where appropriate

We also recognise that some highly able pupils may not always demonstrate their potential through examination results alone. This includes pupils with additional learning needs, English as an Additional Language, or other barriers which may mask their strengths.

Challenge and Enrichment

Challenge for all is a central principle of teaching and learning at Reed's. All pupils have access to stretch and challenge opportunities within lessons, while identified MAGT pupils receive additional subject-specific enrichment and guidance.

Opportunities may include:

• Advanced academic challenge and extension activities

• Competitions, Olympiads and public examinations

• Independent research and project work

• Leadership opportunities

• Performances, exhibitions and sporting pathways

• Subject societies, lectures and enrichment events

Our objective is to encourage intellectual curiosity, creativity, resilience and independent learning, helping pupils to develop the habits and skills required for future success.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We believe that the most effective support for highly able young people comes when school and home work together. Parents play a vital role in nurturing curiosity, encouraging resilience and helping children develop a love of learning.

For further guidance, we recommend the resources produced by the National Association for Able Children in Education (NACE), including their parent guide which you can read HERE

This free resource offers practical advice on recognising and supporting high ability, understanding the needs of more able learners, and helping children thrive both academically and personally.
